Manchester, Grey Horse Inn
Good Beer Guide-listed pub on Portland Street. Small front bar, widening out; tiny open-air passage at back, with central counter, drinking right, TV, old local and sporting photos on walls. Five cask ales on offer at my visit, mainly from Hydes.

Surprising survivors, Portland St
In a street of large modern blocks, hotels and Victorian / Edwardian palaces of commerce this unassuming row of shops and pubs has so far escaped the developer. The taller building with the huge windows houses the Colin Jellicoe private art gallery on its ground floor.

"The Circus Tavern", Portland Street, Manchester
The Manchester Bar Reviews web site says this about The Circus Tavern: "The Circus Tavern is a hidden gem, if you only have time to visit one real pub in Manchester, make this the one. The reasons? Well, firstly it is Manchester’s smallest pub, secondly they serve real ale, from real pumps and put it in real pint pots, and thirdly, anyone who is anyone in Manchester’s sporting and television history has been in here at some point or another – as the photographs on the wall prove. There are two tiny rooms inside, a front room with a bar which you actually walk into off the street, it’s that small, and a second room with some seating and tables. This bar is very friendly, not surprising when you consider that if you are drinking in there then you are probably sat on someone’s knee or stood on their toe. Well worth a visit!"
