Pride Lock
Lock#87 viewed from the cast-iron footbridge crossing the lower entry. The lock, which was built for the Rochdale Canal Company in 1804, runs alongside Canal Street in the heart of the city’s famous “Gay Village”. It is Grade II-listed (Historic England List Entry Number: 1247580 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1247580 ). Here, it has been decorated with rainbow colours for the 2021 Manchester Pride Festival. A street party is taking place on Canal Street, evidenced by the many flags and pennants. Lock#87 is one of the "Rochdale Nine". When the rest of the Rochdale Canal was closed to navigation in 1952, these nine locks which link the Ashton and Bridgewater Canals, through the centre of Manchester, were the only part of the canal to remain open, forming part of the "Cheshire Ring".
