Canal crane on Ashton Canal, Manchester
Construction of the Ashton Canal was started in 1796. It was built to provide coal from Oldham and Ashton under Lyme to Manchester. Although initially it prospered with the coming of the railways it started to decline and the final traffic was in 1958. Although un-navigable by 1961 it was restored by 1974 by the Peak Forest Canal Society. Cranes like this would have been important in loading and unloading the narrowboat's.
