Manchester Monastery, Gorton Lane
The Monastery, which is on Gorton Lane in West Gorton, is Grade II listed. It was built between 1863 and 1872 by Franciscan monks who had come to Manchester in 1861 to serve the local Catholic community.
The Monastery was sadly vacated by the Franciscans in 1989 and was prey to significant vandalism and theft.
Following a fundraising campaign by a charitable trust and grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, the Architectural Heritage Fund, North West Development Agency and the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), the site and buildings have been restored.

The Church and Friary of St Francis (Gorton Monastery)
Large red-brick building in 13th century Gothic style with a steeply-pitched slate roof. The thirteen-bay nave makes a very tall, narrow building of simple regularity. By contrast, the gabled south front with three flying buttresses to the full height of the nave is an elaborate demonstration of Gothic features and decoration with a strong vertical emphasis.
