St Benedict's from Bennett Street
St Benedict's Church was built in 1880 to a design by J S Crowther. The massive and imposing Grade II* listed building http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101207939-anglican-church-of-st-benedict-ardwick-ward with a church that had an attached school house and presbytery, it benefited from the support of a sole benefactor, the local wealthy merchant, John Marsland Bennett. It closed in 2002 and became an "at risk" building. It was saved by climber, John Dunne, who after much hard work and a £70,000 grant from English Heritage opened the Manchester Climbing Centre http://www.climbingcentregroup.com/centres/manchester/ on Saturday 26th February 2005 having replaced pews with synthetic rock faces and placing a cave where once the altar stood.
