Longsight Railway Depot
Seen in June 1981 during an arranged visit. The depot was built by the Birmingham and Manchester Railway in 1842 and has grown substantially in the intervening years. Electric locomotives stand between duties outside the carriage sheds. The nearest three locomotives are of Class 86 and were the mainstay of services on the Euston to Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow routes at the time, covering both passenger and freight tasks. Of the class of 100 locomotives that entered service in 1965, around half remain in service to this day handling freight services. The furthest two locomotives are of earlier pilot designs ordered at the dawn of BR's 25kV electrification program for the West Coast mainline. The closest shed has been extended by around 50ft since this photo was taken and the catenary over the nearest locos removed. The track layout has been simplified as well - reducing the number of tracks through the two nearest sheds to 2 running lines only. The catenary closest to the camera remains in situ.

Longsight railway depot
There has been a depot at Longsight since the Birmingham and Manchester Railway in 1842. The present buildings are operated by West Coast Traincare and look after Virgin's fleet of Pendolino and Voyager trains as well as local electric multiple units. It is difficult to get a photo of the buildings other than from a passing train.
