Manchester Corporation Crossley bus 2156 at Belle Vue ? 1966
The Crossley bus type was an iconic feature of the Manchester Corporation fleet, and this view was taken on a tour to mark the final days of operation of the type. However, the main interest of the picture for general consumption is the entrance to the Belle Vue entertainment complex, which has now completely disappeared. Belle Vue opened in 1836 as gardens, for middle class customers, but from the 1870s an amusement park was added and the zoo expanded and it became a major attractor in North West England. Later additions included a greyhound race track and a speedway stadium. The site closed in stages due to financial difficulties between 1977 and 1987, and only the greyhound stadium remains. In its place there is a mixture of light industrial and residential development.
