Rear aspect of "The Northern"
"The Northern" is a new pub in Tib Street, in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Here we are in Oldham St. looking at the rear of the premises with its astonishingly realistic decoration

Tib Street
On the left is a multi-storey carpark that has footbridge access into Afleck's Palace. On the wall above the street art are tablets transferred from the premises of J & N Philips & Co. Ltd. founded 1747 whose building stood on this site from 1826 until 1969. Two tablets remember employees who lost their lives in the "Great War" 1914-1919 and one lists their names. Two smaller tablets list the names of those who died in WWII 1939-1945.

Smithfield Building, Oldham Street, Manchester
Late-C19th buildings grouped around a courtyard and converted to flats for Urban Splash in 1997-98. The two lower floors look new while the original facades were retained above.
It was built for the department store, Affleck and Brown, once regarded as "the Harrods of the North". Information from http://manchesterhistory.net.

Cranes in Chains
The former electricity substation on the corner of Tib Street and Thomas Street in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter is managed by The Outhouse, an outdoor project space for public art, and has developed something of a cult following in recent years. The once-inconspicuous brick building has been used as a canvas by some of Manchester's most talented street artists.
The latest mural to adorn its wall is “Cranes in Chains” by Qubek, a Manchester-based graffiti artist and muralist. His work can be found right across the city, including many walls and boardings around the Northern Quarter (see https://streetartnq.com/artists/qubek for some examples).

26-32 Oldham Street, Manchester
Shabby chic late-C19th shops with the odd flourish such as the scrolls and a shaped gable.
This area of Manchester has undergone a renaissance in recent years, superficially at least. In the hackneyed argot of modern urban regeneration it has been christened the "Northern Quarter" (cf. 'Jewellery Quarter' in Birmingham, 'Baltic Triangle' in Liverpool, 'Holbeck Urban Village' in Leeds). Fashionable bars - of which Dry is perhaps the apotheosis - and restaurants have sprung up, and city-centre living has been fostered. As a student in Manchester in 1985-88 I must have been remarkably parochial as I scarcely recall venturing north of Piccadilly Gardens, but my impression was that, despite being only a stone's throw from the city centre proper, this area was somewhat desolate.
