The Lord Nelson (1), 88 Newton Street
A late Victorian pub, originally The Lord Nelson Hotel, and with the date 1895 above the entrance door. It is located just off Great Ancoats Street, on the corner of Newton Street and Houldsworth Street. It is perhaps surprising it has survived, when so much else has gone from around here, and more seems likely to disappear too. Manchester is mushrooming so fast, it is in danger of forgetting its past. Image Image

The Lord Nelson (3) - sign, 88 Newton Street
Named after the famous Lord Nelson, whose victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 is still remembered. There are many pubs named after him, and this one wasn't opened until 90 years after his death. An impressive portrait. There is also a similar one on one of the building's corners. Manchester, Newton Street Post and Sorting Office
A large, mainly Edwardian building which dates from 1909 and occupies a large plot of land between Faraday Street and Houldsworth Street incorporating a large sorting office annexe (1965-8) on the Lever Street side (at the back as we look at this photograph). Today the major part of the building has been converted into a residential complex known as The Sorting House and it features a Japanese style communal area. Until recently the Faraday Street end of the building (nearest to the camera) was still used as a Crown Post Office but that is now also closed with a notice inside the doorway proclaiming that “the Post Office has moved to Piccadilly Gardens”.
