Lant collector
The back corner of Ilkley Manor House. The stone sticking out of the wall looks to have been a drain from a "lant bowl" inside the house to a "lant trough" outside. Urine from male members of the household was thus collected. When stale it was called "lant" and used for many purposes, including wool-scouring and the manufacture of saltpetre.
