Whalebone Arch, Wood Lane, Rothwell
A set of whale jaw bones has been situated on Wood Lane for 'more than 150 years, originally sited at the entrance to a private garden', according to one social media source, but I don't have other verification of that and no Ordnance Survey map (from 1893 onwards) shows a house here. Depending on different sources this is between the third and sixth set, as they do not last indefinitely. With a virtual worldwide ban on whaling now, they would be difficult to replace again. Electricity substation, Wood Lane, Rothwell
This was originally a large substation building for the Rothwell branch of Leeds Corporation Tramways who also had an adjacent depot (now demolished). The eastern end is still used as a small local substation, and the remainder is in light industrial use.
