The former Marquis of Granby
Former inn built 1695, restored 1999. The Marquis of Granby was a popular soldier in the 18th century, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-General, Commander in Chief and Master-General of the Ordnance. Subsequently he followed a career in politics.
He is probably best known today for being popularly supposed to have more pubs named after him than any other person (mostly in the East Midlands) — due, it is said, to his practice of setting up old soldiers of his regiment as publicans when they were too old to serve any longer.
