Former Mechanics Institute, 15 South Market Place, Alford
The former Mechanics Institute in the South Market Place was built in 1854. It is now a solicitor's office. There was lecture room together with a reference library containing “many very valuable standard works” and a circulating library, which contained many “scientific and useful books”. It was built on a site given by the Hon. R. A. Christopher-Nisbet-Hamilton, on lease, at a nominal rent, for 999 years and the fund for the erection of the building was raised by shares of £5 each. It was reported in 2002 that the building was the last to benefit from the Alford Townscape Heritage Initiative to improve town centre properties.

Film set at Alford
Filming was taking place on the market square, though not many residents were aware of it, as it was so quiet. The few locals were amused to see knickers arranged like bunting in front of the 'market stall' prop.
