Dr. Edward Parker Charlesworth
Standing on the corner of Union Road and Carline Road in the grounds of the former Lawn Asylum http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/104995, this statue of Dr. Charlesworth by London sculptor T. Milnes recognises a remarkable man. He was vice president and physician from the opening of hospital in November 1819 until his death on 21st February 1853. He pioneered non-restraint in the treatment of those suffering from mental illness, an inscription on the sides ends with "...his original views now happily influence the treatment of the insane through all civilised nations".
