The Yorkshire Trading Company, Old Market Buildings, Eastgate, Louth
Grade II Listed Market Hall. 1866 from Rogers and Marsden design. It was reputedly designed as a copy of Kings Cross Station. It was built at a cost of £7,000 on the site of the 'great house' first mentioned in 1621 and the New Reindeer Inn first mentioned in 1782 (1861 innkeeper and brewer Lewis Dickinson). The name commemorated above the doorway is one Samuel Trought, surgeon, magistrate and mayor of Louth in the mid-19th century. 1919 Kelly's tells us the clock on the tower was purchased by subscription, at a cost of about 100 guineas. The top spire was refurbished in 1954. Pevsner informs us that the four gargoyles were carved by T W Wallis.

Wrights of Louth
Traditional book shop on the junction of New Street and Eastgate, famous for its upside down sign. The story goes that the shop used to be a general grocery store run by Bill Platt from 1913 for many years. When the sign over the doorway blew down in a storm it was affixed by accident the wrong way up. Bill quickly recognised that it had become a talking point and therefore a good advert, so he left it. Later local businessman Mick Wright took on the store and turned it into a newsagent/bookshop and just kept the tradition.

Wrights of Louth
Famous bookseller and newsagents on Eastgate in Louth, now closed due to retirement. The story behind the upside-down sign is that in the early 20th century the shop was a general grocers owned by Bill Platt. The sign blew down in a storm and was inadvertently restored upside-down ..... it quickly became a talking point and Bill capitalised on the advertising opportunity and left it there. The shop was subsequently taken over by booksellers Mick and Carol Wright who continued the tradition.
