Bridge Street: a study in brick walls
These walls are not just elegant, they are functional. The big square pillars give extra strength to hold back the soil, but even one of these is leaning. Only the plainer wall on the left remains vertical. This design, usually with no mortar, seems a popular form of retaining wall in this area, perhaps because it can move without cracking.
