Lime Kiln house above the former railway station
This spectacular house is sited near to the former Red Wharf Bay and Benllech Railway Station and, as the name suggests, was the site of a lime kiln. Shortly after the construction of the railway in 1909, the owner of the limestone quarry at Red Wharf Bay hit on the idea of using the railway to ship lime products which previously had gone by sea. He built a new kiln overlooking the station, transporting the limestone to it by horse and cart. The venture turned out to be uneconomic and the site of the kiln was then used to build a house.

The once busy Red Wharf Bay and Benllech Railway Station and Goods Yard
This was the terminus of the Holland Arms (Pentre Berw) to Benllech railway built in 1909. In addition to the busy goods yard, it had a 260ft long platform. But, alas, the 10km line had been built too late. Though initially busy, its traffic by the 1920s was being siphoned away by buses and lorries. Regular passenger services were withdrawn in 1930 and the station was closed to freight in 1950. By 1953 the line had been lifted. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Red_Wharf_Bay_and_Benllech_railway_station_1909.jpg
