Large houses facing Porth Moelfre
In the past these were the homes of ship's masters, many of whom captained ships of the "Welsh Navy" - the Blue Funnel Line. It used to be said that Moelfre wives were more familiar with Antofagasta and Valpariso than with places a mile or two inland of the village in what they referred to as "y wlad" (the country). "Y wlad" began at the junction on top of the hill Image

World War II Memorial
This memorial, which has no names on it, states in English that "Our street lights were installed as a memorial to the men of this district who made the supreme sacrifice in the 1939-45 war. The Welsh, above, slightly more flowery in tone, states "The street lights of this district have been lit in memory of the heroes who strove to keep the lights of civilisation aflame and who are now in the realm of the eternal daylight". The word "Rhyfel" is Welsh for "war".
