Hindlea Anchor, Moelfre
On October 27, 1959 the Moelfre Lifeboat crew performed a skilful rescue in horrendous conditions. The rescue of the Hindlea earned Moelfre RNLI Coxswain Richard (Dic) Evans a Gold Medal for his outstanding seamanship. The 506 tonne coaster was dragging her anchor two miles north of Moelfre in heavy seas and hurricane force gales gusting up to 104 mph. Without hesitation the Moelfre RNLI lifeboat was launched and Coxswain Evans drove her through tremendous seas, towards the Hindlea. When the stricken vessel got to within 200 yards of the rocky coast, the crew of eight lined up to abandon ship with huge seas sweeping clean over them. The men were rescued and the anchor was later presented to the town.
