Ornate village pump at Bodedern
The inscription, in Welsh only, on this pump reads that it was erected in memory of the late Capt. James King, of Presaddfed. King, a retired captain in the elite 87th (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot - the "Faughs" (their war cry being "Faugh A Ballagh" [Fág a' Bealach], meaning Clear the Way) - was murdered on his own doorstep by an Irish vagrant in 1873 after he reprimanded him for knocking at the front rather than the back door. Being childless King had already bequeathed Presaddfed to the Stanleys, of Alderley and Penrhos, Holyhead Image In gratitude the Stanleys had a village pump erected at Bodedern. Image
