Graves of five RA men lost in the Rhosneigr Botha Disaster of August, 1941
These five graves in Llanfaelog New Cemetery are those of members of the Royal Artillery drowned, with six other would be rescuers, in an attempt to save the crew of Blackburn Botha L6417 which had crashed into the sea at Rhosneigr in a violent storm on the 28th August, 1941. From left to right, they are those of: Gnr. C.H.Thornton, aged 20, married from West Molesey, Surrey. Awarded King's Commendation for Brave Conduct and Bronze Medal with Parchment of the RNLI. 2/Lt P.T. Whysall, aged 23, from Kentish Town. Gnr. R. Eaton, aged 20. W.O.II (Battery Sergeant Major) A.W. Moger, aged 34. Gnr. S. Wilkins, aged 33, married, from Bow, London. Image Image

The grave of 1832450 Gunner C.H. Thornton RA at Llanfaelog
Gnr. Clarence Herbert Thornton, of West Molesley, Surrey, lost his life, with 4 other colleagues from his unit, in attempting to save the crew of the Blackburn Botha L6417 which crashed into the sea off Rhosneigr in a violent storm on 28th August, 1941. Aged 20, and a married man, Gnr. Thornton was awarded the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct and the RNLI's Bronze Award with Parchment for his actions that day. Image Image

Eglwys Maelog Sant Church
St Maelog established a monastic cell here in 6thC. During the middle ages St Maelog's church was one of 5 chapels of ease of Llanbeulan parish - the mother church being that of St Beulan at Image St Maelog's was rebuilt in 1848 using monies received from the railway company for wayleave across lands belonging to the parish.
