The tower was finished in 1817, two years after the Battle of Waterloo. In 1860, the bronze statue of the 1st Marquess of Anglesey, William Henry Paget, was placed on the top of the tower. He was Wellington's second in command, and lost a leg at Waterloo.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll: steps in the Marquess of Anglesey?s Column
I am not sure whether the cavity filling stuff is a scare or a reassurance. We are looking down the spiral staircase within Image; some of the wooden stairs are a little creaky while several have been replaced by sturdier-looking metal ones.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll: Marquess of Anglesey?s Column inscription
The text on the north side of the column's base reads: The inhabitants of the counties of Anglesey and Caernarvon have erected this column in grateful commemoration of the distinguished military achievements of their countryman Henry William Marquess of Anglesey, the leader of the British cavalry in Spain throughout the arduous campaign of 1807 and the second in command of the armies confederated against France at the memorable Battle of Waterloo on the 18th of June 1815. The text is repeated in Welsh on the east side of the column (see Image).
