The grave of John Elias, the "Anglesey Pope"
Elias, a High Calvinist and a High Tory, was an autocratic figure. Married to the dowager Lady Bulkeley he was able to exert his influence at many levels in the county. A powerful fire and brimstone preacher he swayed public opinion in Anglesey against Catholic Emancipation and the 1832 Reform Bill. His intolerance of views other than his own and his readiness to excommunicate any who contradicted him led his enemies to dub him "Pab Mon" - the Anglesey Pope. Image

Churchyard at Llanfaes
A quote from 'Discovering Welsh graves' by Alun Roberts. "Just on the left of the entrance to St Catherine's churchyard is a substantial memorial marking the resting place of John Elias (1774-1841), the finest and most influential preacher of his day. Through the gifts of oratory and graphical imagery he could reduce his open-mouthed congregations to a state of fear and trembling in their thousands."

The old smithy and St Catherine's Church, Llanfaes
The smithy dates back to the time of the Napoleonic Wars. St Catherine's Church was once a royal church and a daughter of King John of England, Princess Joan (Siwan) the wife of Llywelyn the Great, was buried here in 1237. Her empty stone coffin is now kept in the porch of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas in the near-by town of Beaumaris.

The hamlet of Old Llanfaes
The hamlet, dominated by St Catherine's Church, consists of small traditional cottages. It contrasts with the New Llanfaes made up of housing built for the workers of the now closed Saro factory.
