Reopened ditch in the Rhythallt marshes
In the immediate post war years POW labour was used to drain these marshes, using nothing more than picks and shovels. These moorsoldaten, dressed in black and with large yellow roundels on their backs, were most probably ex-Waffen-SS who could not be trusted to work on farms. Guarded by armed Tommies, they slaved away in all weathers. In the evening they were marched back to the village of Brynrefail to await transport to the POW camp at Bontnewydd. Image
