Siop y Gornel and Rhes Faenol Terrace
In my youth this was known as Siop Marc as it was owned by Marc Parry, a quarry first aider and the O/C of the local youth wing of the St John's Ambulance Brigade. During the working week, the shop was run by Mrs Parry. It was one of Deiniolen's forty shops. Such has been the change in retail patterns that now only one store has survived.

Boarded-up Building, in Deiniolen.
Hard times in the High Street, boarded-up businesses at Deiniolen! Where does the blame lie? Compare Eric Jones' picture of the same street, taken two years previous.

The still boarded-up Wellington Inn
It is sad to see the Wellington still boarded up. I was brought up opposite the Wellington. It was then run by Frank Wall, a former Liverpool Police Inspector, and was a very busy pub. In those days the pubs closed early and in summer we used to watch the turning out at 9 o'clock. A few feet away to the right was a drop of a foot or more from the pavement to the roadway. We used to bet which of the known hard drinkers would come to grief on the step. One particular gentleman was soon excluded from the list of runners as he invariably misjudged the drop.

Ty Elidir - Community Centre, Deiniolen
This centre was financed by a special European fund designed to help economically depressed and deprived communities. It contains a library, meeting rooms, and a computer room. It also acts as a Life Long Learning Centre, and, every Tuesday morning, it becomes a police post.
