Segontium
The Roman fort of Segontium was built in AD77 to house an auxiliary force. It was occupied until AD394. Only foundations of the buildings remain, as stone was probably taken from the site for Edward I's castle below the site. However the fort left its presence in the town's name: caer yn ar Fôn - the fort in the land opposite Môn (Anglesey). The photograph illustrates the commanding position of the fort, high above the Menai strait. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segontium_Roman_Fort

Segontium
Originally established in the autumn of AD77 by Gnaeus Julius Agricola (Roman governor of Britain). It was built to command the Menai Straits and thus enable the capture of the island of Mona (Anglesey). The site was occupied until c.AD383.
