Segontium Roman Fort museum, Caernarfon
Viewed across the A4085 Constantine Road. The name sign on the right shows THE NATIONAL TRUST SEGONTIUM. The museum occupies part of the site of the Roman fort of Segontium, founded by Agricola c77 AD. In contrast to the coastal location of Caernarfon Castle, built a millennium later, Segontium occupies higher ground about a kilometre inland, with a good view of the Menai Strait. The fort was abandoned in the 4th century.

Oak at the eastern edge of Segontium Roman Fort, Caernarfon
Viewed across the A4085 Constantine Road. Could this tree be a survivor from Roman times? The answer is no. Oaks very rarely reach 1,000 years old. The oldest recorded in the UK is about 1,200, though dating an ancient tree's origins are often subject to the obscuring mists of time. Segontium was abandoned 17 centuries ago.
