My assistants are really enjoying the snow by the track to this isolated farm on the edge of the Conwy Valley.

Overlooking Craigyfedwen toward Llandudno Junction
The small outcrop ahead is Craigyfedwen and beyond that the estuary of the Afon Conwy can just be seen. Hill fort at Craigyfedwen
On the 25,000 map it's very striking as an interesting object. The ramparts curl round the hill.

Craigyfedwen spotlight
A gleam of sun illuminates the summit of this rocky eminence across a smooth, snow-covered pasture. The distant view includes Conwy Castle and the sea with its newly-commissioned wind turbines.

Craigyfedwen profile
This rocky hill is very prominent when viewed from the valley below, but is otherwise remarkably inconspicuous, since it is placed on the edge of the steep hillside. This easterly view from close by captures a profile against the sky.

Conwy Rhyolite outcrop
The rocky summit of Craigyfedwen comprises an outcrop of the Conwy Rhyolite, a volcanic rock rich in silica which was erupted around 450 million years ago. Violent eruptions created great thicknesses of hot, glassy fragments which can be detected as a characteristic, rubbly texture in these rocks.

Hairy ponies 2
Harsh weather has driven these feral ponies to low altitude where they are foraging on the meagre grass growing under the shelter of the low gorse bushes. It's a complete coincidence that I captured a similar image nearby last year!
