Signage at Blind Veterans UK, Craig-y-Don
Built by the wealthy Lady Forester in 1902-04, as a convalescence home for sick and injured shale miners, the three-winged hall mansion overlooks the coastal town of Llandudno.
It became for a period the North Wales Medical Centre until 2006 and after refurbishment it re-opened in 2011 and it is now one of Blind Veterans UK centres, the UK's only charity for visually-impaired veterans (formerly St Dunstans). The organisation dates back to 1915, when it was set up to help blind soldiers coming back from the trenches in the First World War.
Veterans can attend Lady Forester's Home for an assessment of their needs, training, rehabilitation or simply a few days' holiday to give their carers a break.
