Llangollen Railway - The Unknown Warrior
Tornado was the first really large brand new/replica main line steam locomotive and there are now a variety of new build projects on its coat-tails. Some are thought likely to fail whilst others are very likely to deliver on their promises. This is one such project - No. 5551 a 'Patriot' class locomotive to be called The Unknown Warrior and intended to be in steam in 2017 to be ready for the centenary of the end of WWI. The frames and outside cylinders are erected and the driving wheel sets were nearby. The big red lump being leant on is the middle cylinder casting. There is no doubt in my mind that this will be a success. There are at least three major new build projects at Llangollen.

Former NER P3 0-6-0 (LNER J27) at Llangollen Railway Depot, 'Thomas the Tank Engine', 1992
No. 2392 was built in 9/23, the last of its class to be built and in 9/67 the last to be withdrawn (as BR No. 65894). From 10/71 it was kept for very many years at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, being acquired by the North Eastern Railway Preservation Group in 1976, who restored it to full working order. It worked for long periods on the NYMR, but also on several other Heritage Railways, including the Llangollen Railway as seen here; it was at the NRM at York 1984-1996, restored again, then back at work on the NYMR and elsewhere, until being retired finally at Darlington North Road Museum since 2006.
