Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Chirk
The patron saint is St Richard Gwyn, c.1537-1584, a Welsh school-teacher who was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason. He refused to attend Anglican services and when taken there forcibly was fined for disrupting the service. This seems harsh, but was, of course, only four years before the Spanish Armada, by which the king of Spain intended to force Britain to return to the Roman Catholic religion.

The Welcome to Chirk website states "The name Chirk is thought to be an English corruption of the name 'Ceiriog', but we think it comes from the word 'Church' as the original Welsh name for the town was 'Eglwys-y-Waun' or 'Church on the Moor' (now shortened to Y Waun (The Moor)).

Welcome to Wales sign at the southern edge of Chirk
Viewed across the B5070 Chirk Road. As is often the case with boundary signs, this one is near, but not on, the boundary. It ought to be adjacent to the Shropshire (England) sign http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4285115 which is about 200 metres away. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4285245 to a closer view of the Welcome sign.

Croeso i Gymru/ Welcome to Wales, Chirk
The sign is located here. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4285234 Paul Kynaston told me that the sign was made by George Stephenson, blacksmith at Whitehurst Gate at the opposite end of Chirk. The design drawing was on the wall of the smithy in the 1970s.
