Red Hill filling station, Birstall
Grade II Listed BP petrol station on the A6 Loughborough Road at Red Hill. Its canopy comprises six overlapping circular parasols, each supported by a single column. It was designed by American Eliot Noyes (1910-1977) who was commissioned by oil company Mobil in the mid-1960s to design a new corporate identity, including the circular canopies on its filling stations. It was used on nearly 20,000 new and refurbished filling stations around the world until the 1980s. As far as anyone seems to know, this is the only remaining example in the UK.
