Ironically located on the west side of Leicester, it opened in 1966 and has had several refurbishments.

Leicester Forest East Services
The services at Leicester Forest East were opened in 1966 at the same time as this stretch of the M1 motorway. Most of the facilities are located on the bridge which straddles the carriageways; this is an unusual arrangement for the UK but does at least avoid the duplication inherent in more conventional designs. Even so, the building looks its age and there are suggestions that the site will eventually close to allow for improvements to junction 21.

Leicester Forest East services, from the northbound side
Leicester Forest East was one of the first generation motorway service stations, which were characterised by their being accessible only from the motorway itself and by their having a prominent bridge across the carriageway as a central part of their design, in this case housing the restaurant.
Sites for service stations were identified every twelve miles on the first motorways; only alternate ones were developed, with the intention that the others would be built on when traffic loads justified it. Leicester Forest East was placed between sites at Long Whatton to the north (superseded by the current Donington Park services) and Lutterworth to the south (still undeveloped and used only as a depot for works materials).
