Gateway to Oakham Castle
Of uncertain date, the Buildings of England suggests thirteenth century with alterations and additions in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The listing suggests it is the work of the Second Duke of Buckingham which would date it to c1700.

Oakham Castle Gate
The gateway was rebuilt in the seventeenth century by George Villiers, later Duke of Buckingham, who had become Lord of the Manor in 1621. The wrought iron gates are Victorian. The sun had yet to break through at 9.40 on a March morning.

Passageway and gateway to Oakham Castle
The gate is thought to date from the period of the first Duke of Buckingham, i.e. mid 17th century, and is Listed Grade I. To the right is the rear part of 17 Market Place, possibly dating back also to the 17th century. Listed Grade II.
