The Defynnog Yew
In fact there are several old yew trees within the churchyard but this one - or is it two? - is measurably the oldest. It has been dated to at least 5000 years old, and possibly as much as 5,600 years, which makes it contender not only for oldest tree in Wales and indeed Britain but possibly also Europe. The lack of any remaining heartwood means that its precise age will probably never be ascertained but radio-carbon dating has given something of a handle on it. Long ago it split into two separate trees but still it seems to thrive. It pre-dates the church by three millennia and was truly ancient when Romans marched through this area, indeed it was ancient when the local Silures tribe built their nearby hill-forts. Even their Bronze Age forebears were late on the scene when it came to this tree.

St Cynog, Defynnog
Fine limewashed church with evidence of a very early date. Regrettably locked on my visit - I did not have time to seek out the key, but the local Pevsner suggests that a return would be very worthwhile.
