Sign for the Cross Keys
Prior to the Reformation this was a very common inn sign, for it was the emblem of St Peter. When Henry VIII broke with Rome a number of signs changed to the King's Head. Later the keys had a significance when watchmen kept guard throughout the night on behalf of the community.

The Cross Keys, Milnthorpe
When the turnpike road between Kendal and Lancaster was constructed through Milnthorpe the village became an important staging post and the Cross Keys gained a fine reputation as a coaching inn with stabling for 36 horses. For a view of the sign see Image
