The farmhouse is a Grade II listed late 18th Century building http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-182299-gunnerthwaite-farmhouse-arkholme-with-ca and has a 'Tuscan porch' visible in this zoom shot from the footpath by Moorclose Wood.

A right of way passes through this farm - surprisingly, we weren't challenged here despite this happening twice nearby. Not many walkers pass this way and this may be too many for some?

I like these two - nothing difficult to recall, just plain no-nonsense 'it does what it says on the tin' type names.

I noticed this upright stone by the wall as I came down the footpath. There seems to be a 'reversed' letter S carved on it. I didn't see any other markings on it or the stone on the ground. It doesn't seem to be on a boundary and there didn't seem to be anything special about the location. It's a mystery! A member of the public who lived nearby and regularly used the path provided a few thoughts: 'It could stand for South, or it could be an olde boundary marker for SNAB, which lies across the field ... Snab High farm is on the road to Arkholme. One possible answer might be that a Swindlehurst family farmed at Gunnerthwaite from about 1840 - 1860. I think the stone's much older than that though. I also know a prominent Quaker family farmed there throughout the 16 and 1700's so it might be warning to Satan to stay away'.

Taken from the bridge near Keer Holme. This small river enters Morecambe Bay at Carnforth. Perhaps Carnforth is named after 'Keer Ford'

This rural line sees an infrequent service of pacers between Leeds and Morecambe. This train however is an excursion from Skegness to Morecambe.

Despite the map showing the public right of way as going straight through this farm we were challenged. There is a concessionary diversion to the west of the farm which, not very surprisingly, has a signpost. This is known amongst walkers of unfrequented footpaths as "trying it on".
