Morecambe station 1976 with Heysham oil train
A class 47 locomotive, as yet to be repainted in 'corporate blue' livery, runs round a train of oil tanks bound for Heysham at Morecambe station which then abutted directly onto the promenade. Since 1976, the station has been relocated further inland and the facilities in the photograph have been redeveloped, erasing all traces of the railway.

Train arriving at Morecambe station, 1993
A diesel multiple unit train arriving at Morecambe's old railway station in 1993. The station closed the following year, being replaced by a new one which was around 400 metres away. Although the old station building survives, the platforms were demolished. An indoor market and cinema now occupy this site.

Morecambe Promenade Station - pre-1994 station
View westward to buffer-stops; ex-Midland terminus of the line from Leeds/Bradford via Skipton, Hellifield and Lancaster. An electric (6,600V 50Hz) service to Heysham had been inaugurated back in 7/08 and extended back to Lancaster in 9/08, but reverted to steam in 2/51. Electric services (6,600V, 25Hz) were restored from 8/53 until 1/66 (interrupted 10/55 - 3/56). The station (plain 'Morecambe' from 5/68) was closed in 2/94 when the present terminus nearer the town was opened. After 9/58 when Morecambe Euston Road was closed, ex-London & North Western line services were diverted to Promenade: the train in this scene, headed by LMS-type 4MT 2-6-4T No. 42135, is the 14.15 service to Crewe.

And sent forth the dove by the station, Morecambe
The inscribed pillar is the terminus of 'A Flock of Words' - an artwalk created in 2003. The station is the former Morecambe Promenade Station, which opened in 1907 and closed in 1994. It now houses a pub and an information centre. The Festival Market was built on the site of the station platforms.
