Windermere is a small town (population 8245 at 2001 census) which lies about half a mile away from Lake Windermere. Although the town Windermere does not touch the lake, it took the name of the lake when the railway line was built in 1847 and the station was called "Windermere".

St Martin and St Mary Primary School
Entrance to the school in Princes Road. This Church of England primary school was created in 2013 by the merger of St Mary's Nursery & Infant School with Windermere Junior. It is one of the larger primary schools in Cumbria, with 415 pupils in 2014.
