The scouts were from 3rd Altrincham Scout Group, and were en route by bicycle to Lowes Water in the Lake District to assist with the war effort, by cutting pit props. Bridge 96, Lancaster Canal
A footbridge taking the path over Ripley Heights from Aldcliffe Road. Not the most attractive bridge on the canal. Apparently this bridge replaced the old pitch pine bridge in May 1954 and is a section of a ships gangway cut to fit. The road side of this bridge has a post box in it the only one in a bridge on the Lancaster Canal. (Info from Swain 1990.)
