Former Springfield Barracks

First railway station, Lancaster
The terminus of the Lancaster and Preston Junction Railway opened in 1840, linking Lancaster with London. The Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, which opened in 1846, branched off the Preston line about 1km to the south of here. A new station was built (Lancaster Castle), which led to the eventual closure of the first station.
