Start of The Cumbria Way
This is the official start of The Cumbria Way long distance footpath to Carlisle, indicated by the blue sign (photograph Image) on the stone wall (next photograph Image). Behind the wall Gill Banks Beck becomes Town Beck and enters The Gill Culvert, the first in a series of culverts with the watercourse being mainly underground through the town centre. It has frequently flooded and between 2015 and 2018 much remedial work was undertaken, including rebuilding and increasing the height of the wall in an effort to reduce the flood risk.
