Altcourse Prison
HMP Altcourse was the first privately designed, constructed, managed and financed prison in the UK. The prison opened its doors to prisoners on 1st December 1997. Altcourse is a category B prison receiving prisoners from the courts in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. The prison accepts young offenders and adult male prisoners who are both sentenced and remanded by the courts.

Higher Lane
This used to be a thoroughfare connecting Seeds Lane, to the north, with Brookfield Drive, just behind shot. It led past a couple of special schools on the left (now demolished). Altcar Prison now stands just to the right of shot.
