A late-Georgian terrace, c1820, of two-bay houses, each with an arched doorcase flanked by Doric columns. The familiar local motif of painted wedge lintels is also in evidence. Grade II listed. It has been colonised by the University of Liverpool.

Sports Centre, Oxford Street, Liverpool
"The most startling and assertive of all the [Liverpool] university's post-war buildings", opined Pevsner. By Denys Lasdun & Partners, 1963-66. Its concrete and glass exterior was however, in the opinion of Nikolaus Pevsner himself, "a calculated insult to the Late Georgian rectangularity of nearby Abercromby Square". And Mr P. was not retrograde, he would not have been singing from the same hymn sheet as Prince Charles. The writing on the end wall, an "urban art project", reads "253 babies are born every minute worldwide" and below, "Are you optimistic about the future?" To me it has misanthropic overtones, but I suppose could be read either way.

Is it a hand holding an elephant? Whatever it is, I loved it! It stands outside the entrance to the Music(?) Department in Liverpool. Please advise if I've got it wrong.

Liverpool Heroes memorial
The ‘Liverpool Heroes’ memorial, located in Abercromby Square, commemorates the sixteen men from the city of Liverpool awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for valour in military conflict. The statue commemorates the actions of Captain Noel Chavasse VC & Bar MC, and a Liverpool Scottish stretcher bearer attending a wounded soldier. During the First World War Captain Chavasse was twice awarded the Victoria Cross, the second posthumously after he continued to rescue and treat men during the conflict at Wieltje, Belgium, though he was mortally wounded himself. Captain Chavasse lived in the square where this memorial is located. All sixteen local recipients of the Victoria Cross are named on the base of the memorial. The bronze statue is the work of local sculptor, Tom Murphy.
