Ventilation shaft
This is a ventilation shaft for the Wapping railway tunnel from Edge Hill to Liverpool Docks. It stands in a park on the site of Crown Street station. Parliament gave permission for the Manchester & Liverpool Railway to be built in 1826. Passenger trains started at the Crown Street Station in Liverpool and terminated at Water Street in Manchester, it was opened on 15th September, 1830. Crown Street station became a goods station when Lime Street was opened. and finally closed in 1972. The Wapping tunnel under the site also closed in 1972.
