Altcar Rifle Range Halt railway station (site), Merseyside
Opened in 1860 as "Hightown Siding" by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on the line from Liverpool to Southport, the name changed to "Highgate New Siding" in 1865, then "Highgate Rifle station" in 1871 before becoming "Altcar Rifle Range Halt" in 1886. This non-timetabled halt closed around 1935. View north from the trackside. The platform brickwork was still in situ when this image was taken, although the platform buildings had long-since vanished.

The camp includes rifle ranges. "The facilities at the Altcar training camp play an important role in meeting the training needs of the Regular forces, reserves, and cadets from all three services", said the Ministry of Defence in parliament in 2001. It is also used for commercial team building and performance development events. Photo from public footpath which runs from here north beside the railway.

The camp lies at the estuary mouth of the River Alt, towards the southern end of the Sefton Coast sand dune system, twelve miles north of Liverpool in the village of Hightown. The estate covers 620 acres of range and dry training areas, and 500 acres of beaches and sand dunes which are available for training when there is no live firing. The site is used extensively by regular, reserve and cadet units from all three Services for military and civilian activities and training."
