West Derby War Memorial at Eccleston Park
The 'Lane Ends' war memorial stands on the corner of St Helens Road and Burrows Lane on the road out of Prescot. It is on the site of the old pub 'The Angel' (also known as 'The Sign of The Angel'). Unveiled on 23rd July 1922, the monument is unusual in that it does not record any names of the dead, and instead contains an inscription reading: “To the glorious memory of all those from the West Derby Hundred of the County Palatine of Lancaster who fought and gave their lives for their king and country in the Great War 1914-1918” Designed by Walter Gilbert and Louis Weingartener, the memorial consists of a square base of three steps, carrying a battered square pedestal with a bronze frieze with soldiers in bas-relief and text. A life-size figure of a junior officer, with binoculars in one hand, and a revolver in the other stands on top the pedestal. Below, a life-size figure of a woman in civilian dress is presenting a laurel garland. The memorial commemorates the dead of West Derby Hundred of Lancashire in World War 1. The memorial is Grade II-listed by English Heritage (English Heritage Building ID: 488034 http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-488034-west-derby-war-memorial-at-eccleston-par#.VWIFM2fbJ_s British Listed Buildings).
