Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool
Andrew Barclay Walker, brewer and city alderman, donated £20,000 for a new art gallery in 1873. Although he was not noted as a patron of the arts, he did give heavily to other causes and this particular gift may have been intended to improve the image of brewing at a time when the temperance movement was strong. Whatever the motives, this building was built between 1874 and 1877 and now houses one of the finest collections of fine and decorative arts in Europe. The Seble Fountain stands in the foreground.
