Kirkby railway station, Merseyside
Opened in 1848 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on what became the line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria via Wigan. When this image was taken, Merseyrail electric trains only ran as far as here (just beyond the bridge) so passengers from Liverpool to Wigan by this line needed to change trains by walking along the platform.
View south west towards Fazakerley and Liverpool. This platform is part of the original station, there was a second platform to the right and there was a building adjoining the bridge, all on this side. The platform beyond the bridge is a later extension.
