"La Princesse" astonishes the crowds in Water Street
The arrival of this enormous mechanical spider in Liverpool, created by François Delarozière of "La Machine", is one of the major events of the European Capital of Culture year.

Tower Buildings, Water Street, Liverpool
And tower it does. A formidable Edwardian pile, its skin of glazed terracotta draped over a steel skeleton. With its crenellated towers it is reminiscent of a fortress, and in fact Pevsner remarks that it boasts a "bizarre mix of Baroque and medieval motifs". (Perhaps the architect was conscious of the Stanley family's medieval tower which stood on this site.) It was built 1906-10 to the designs of Walter Aubrey Thomas. Grade II* listed.
It is now flats.
